Bed Bug Bites

Bed bugs can be everywhere. Most probably, your bed contains hundreds to thousands of bed bugs that crawl and creep into your body when you are asleep.

Bed bugs are like insects equipped with intelligence. They really can get smart. Bed bugs suck the blood of their host, which of course are humans, and sometimes animal pets like frogs, cats, birds and even bats.

Long time ago, bed bugs are most prevalent among birds nests. But because just like the human species, bed bugs are evolving and adapting to environmental changes, they have learned to crawl into peoples homes, particularly beds and room surfaces.

Bed bugs take their sumptuous meals by using their elongated beaks to pierce through the skin of the host. After that, they start the feast and harshly suck on blood until they can no longer take more.

What a fortune! While people find it hard to find food, bed bugs find it very easy. And more often, they feast and not run out of supplies.

Diseases from bed bugs

Doctors and medical practitioners assure, however, that bed bug bites are not that harmful. Mosquito bites are far more threatening because they can sometimes transfer a number of serious ailments like malaria, dysentery, elephantiasis or h-fever.

In comparison, bites of bed bugs do not pose much health risk. Bed bugs can be a host to a number of diseases but they seldom pass this on to their hosts or victims.

Good thing that bed bugs are safe biters when it comes to ailments and diseases transferred through that way.

Understanding how bed bugs bite

As described earlier, bed bugs use their beaks to pierce skin and get or suck the abundant supply of blood. By doing so, it is inevitable for them not to transfer or leave their saliva into the pierced skin.

This saliva, thankfully, can never contain diseases or pathogens. But, these saliva can cause allergic reactions. Some peoples systems will react harshly to such bites.

Hence, most bed bug bites swell after 10 minutes to 24 hours. Just like mosquito bites, they swell and appear reddish. They are also accompanied by little discomfort and itchiness.

The itch from bed bug bites can be so persistent and annoying that if you keep on scratching, you will be tempted to make it harder. By that, you will be creating little wounds.

At most, that is what bed bug bites can do.

Avoiding bed bug bites

Of course, the beat and most effective way to prevent or avoid bed bug bites is by making sure the insects will not appear during sleep hours. And how can that be?

By ensuring that your bed or your room as a whole is not infested by bed bugs. To prevent bed bugs from attacking, maintain hygiene and cleanliness. Regularly clean the room and be thorough in cleaning crevices and cracks on floors and walls.

If you like traveling, make sure the place you are staying in is not infested with bed bugs. Otherwise, bed bugs can get into your baggage, and voila, when you unpack your things at home, bed bugs will be spread into your room.

There are also insect-repellant products in the market. There are those products that can be applied to your skin like lotion. Once you have these repellant, bed bugs will be reluctant to get near you. They will find your skin a danger zone and will find you unappealing as a food source. Isnt that appealing to you?

Bed bugs, wrapping up

Bed bug bites are hard to avoid especially if you are not living alone in your room, or you have thousands of bed bugs families in your bed. Prevention is better than cure.

Might as well be very careful not to make your room and bed breeding grounds for bed bugs. In the market, you can also find dozens of lotions or skin products that serve as repellant to bed bugs.

Being bitten by bed bugs can never be serious, dont worry. All you have to do is treat the bitten skin part the way you treat mosquito bites. They normally fade out and heal by themselves over a little time.

Bed bugs are unlikely and unwanted housemates you might have currently. They can never be as gross and scary as other insects and pests like cockroaches, but they can be really annoying.

Bed bugs are insects that thrive on small holes, cracks or crevices in walls and floors. Generally, bed bugs like to live in dark and untidy corners or portions of the house.

Bed bugs suck blood. It is their primary means of making a living. Hence, they go out at night and suck blood from unsuspecting victims, who may be sleeping by that time.

Bed bugs do not transit or carry communicable diseases, bu their bites can get really really itchy. To some people, especially the more sensitive ones, bed bugs’ bites can pose serious health situations.

Controlling bed bugs

So the basic question you will have in mind for sure (assuming that your house is infested with bed bugs) is, “ How are bed bugs infestation controlled?”

There are a number of measures or means to control bed bugs.

For a start, you may start by preventing the occurrence or existence of bed bugs in your house. If your home is still not infested, be sure to know how to avoid them.

Cleanliness is one key factor in controlling or preventing bed bugs from thriving in your house. Be sure to make your furniture, walls, and floor spic and span.

Bed bugs love to thrive in beds, so, make sure your bed is fully protected. Regularly change your bed sheets and make sure the bed does not contain unnecessary holes or tears.

If your house already has bed bugs on it, a simple way to control infestation is by applying pesticides or insecticides to the infested areas.

A number of commercially available pesticides especially formulated for bed bugs control are available and accessible in the market. In using one, just be sure to carefully read all labels and instructions before use.

Pesticides, of course, are made up of harsh chemicals that can surely knock out insects like bed bugs. These chemicals are so harmful, that aside from controlling bed bugs, they can also pose health hazards or threats to you.

Hiring professionals

The best and probably the most intelligent solution to controlling bed bugs infestation is through seeking the professional help and services of experts—pest control companies.

Controlling bed bugs is not a ‘spur of the moment’ thing. A  lot and thorough planning has to be conducted beforehand. Before seeking the expert help, be prepared to discard several materials and furniture, if ever the experts will advise you to.

There are a number of pest control companies in your locality. All you have to do is to pick up the phone, and wait for a few hours.

If you are living in an apartment, coordinate with your land lord or land lady. It is their responsibility to make all the necessary arrangements for pest control measures.

State and civil laws mandate them to make sure that their building is safe and pest-free. Talk to them and know the arrangements for pest control service fee payments.

When you plan to control bed bugs infestation in your home with the help of professionals, also be sure to inform or notify your neighbors.

It is because some residues or stink of the pest control chemicals might reach their homes. If ever, that will post serious health risks for them.

Because bed bugs are so persistent, expect the process of controlling them to be really tedious. Insects have that general characteristics—they are so resilient and their systems are so strong.

Normally, controlling bed bugs the professionals’ way can take a few hours, because the experts have to check for any crevices, small cracks or holes where bed bugs might be hiding.

Furniture and home accessories will also have to be checked to make sure the treatment will not miss on any single bug.

At times, pest control experts might advise you to discard several furniture, especially beds. Is because, most beds are made up foams or materials that have tiny holes on it, which is very ideal for bed bugs to hide in.

In disposing or discarding beds, be sure that it can never be used by other people again. Otherwise, bed bugs will transfer from your house to another’s.

Because environmental concerns will rule out burning, you will surely have to put the bed into a special encasing or bug, to make sure all bed bugs on it are trapped inside.

Your day is not that good. You had a horrible nightmare the night before. You peed in your bed. You are already late on your appointment.

What a terrible morning this could be, you though. Then, your right arm starts tom get itchy. You search for the spot and relieved yourself by scratching.

The next minute, your left knee itches, then there?s another spot in your navel, your right elbow, your back, your butt. Oh my God! Your whole body is itching!

What a horrible situation that could be! If you have experienced that, you probably have bed bugs in your bed or in your room.

Because bed bugs cause you too much inconvenience and discomfort, you will certainly be eager to find out how to kill bed bugs.

Killing bed bugs: knowing the target

First, you may not want to act impulsively and kill bed bugs right away. You have to know a few little facts about them.

For a start, it will do that you know that bed bugs are insects (what else could they be, anyway?). Bed bugs are tiny little insects but when they fully mature, healthy and aging bed bugs can get as large as one fourth of an inch. Makes you want to kill them more, huh?

Bed bugs are so tiny, they do not have wings. Thus, you will see them, if you get the lucky chance, crawling on places where they may thrive. Thankfully, they do not have wings. Otherwise, imagine how rapidly they could invade the whole city. You will also find it harder to kill them, if ever they had wings.

Here are some of other trivial facts about bed bugs that will further invoke your emotions and want more to kill them:

o Bed bugs are one of the most persistent insects in the world. Even if you have successfully killed or eliminated them in your home, chances are, another batch of bed bugs will reappear.

o Bed bugs not just hide in small and extremely tiny crevices or cracks in floors, walls, beds or furniture. They live in them. If you are too possessive, kill them, will you?

o Bed bugs are nocturnal. It means that they are rarely seen during daytime, but they can be found crawling and wandering around at night. This is the time they hunt for food and suck blood from unsuspecting hosts or victims, like you. Kill them!

o Bed bugs even without blood from nourishment can endure and survive for at most a year. They can hide within that long period to ensure their survival.

o Bed bugs are good travelers because they usually thrive in baggage, suitcases or luggage. Thus, it is not impossible that a bed bug check will find the existence of bed bugs in cruise ships, vehicles, aircrafts, hotels and even motels.

o Throughout their entire life span, female bed bugs can lay eggs three times. A female bed bug can lay around 300 eggs per batch. So they populate rapidly, huh? Try to reduce that population by killing some.

o Bed bugs? eggs can be hatched within 10 days. Amazing! That is too fast. No wonder, they spread like bunnies! They multiply that rapidly, but the number reduced from their population is no match. Thus, you should strive and make sure you kill a significant number of them.

Killing bed bugs: doing the action

After knowing the little know-whats, it will be time for you to finally embark on the mission—killing bed bugs.

Nobody will say the task of killing bed bugs will be easy. Killing bed bugs will always be challenging, because finding them and determining their habitat and hiding places will already be a tough act.

The best way to kill bed bugs is to prevent your hands from doing the crime. Hire a pest control professional, which can be considered bed bugs assassins or triggermen in the lingo of killing bed bugs.

Pest control professionals know what they are doing and they know which weapon to use to ensure accomplishment of the task.

Thou shall not kill, according to the Bible, but you should. If killing means, killing bed bugs. Right?

Battling the Distribution of Bed Bugs

August 14, 2009 in The Bed Bugs Are Biting | Comments (0)

Bed bugs are insects that do not have wings. They are roughly shaped oval. They measure, once fully grown, from four to five millimeters long. You might find the next piece of information unexpected, but bed bugs are fast runners.

There are easy to see on white linoleum or marble floors, but very difficult to spot on brown wooden floors. This is so because bed bugs are rust brown in color and they even change into a deeper red brown when they finish a blood meal.

The fact that bed bugs are dorsoventrally flat assists their distribution. Since they are so thin, they can squeeze in and fit in very narrow cracks and crevices, oftenly ones that may be found on the floor. Because of their great skillful hiding, bed bugs are very hard to detect.

Bed bug distribution also adds up to the any pieces of information about the two main species of bed bugs that bite human beings.

First, is the common bed bug, more scientifically called cimex lectularius. This kind of bed bug is found in any crevice as long as it is around room temperature. They are of greater distribution in Australia. May it be remote or urban, common bed bugs do not care, only as long as they are distributed to an area that copes well with their needs.

Another kind of bed bugs is the tropical bed bug, or cimex hemipterus. This bed bug has been guessed to be distributed in the tropics a long time ago. However, it was only recently recognized by the medical entomology department. This department can tell you more information about the distribution of the cimex hemipterus in the tropics.

Bed bugs are also distributed finely in human dwellings, bat caves and bird’s nests. In truth, the habitats that have been recently mentioned are the ones found to be most suitable for these said bed bugs. Why? It seems to be quite obvious. Bed bugs are distributed to these habitats because of their offered warmth and hosts they can feed on.

However, you must always remember tht bed bugs are never evenly distributed throughout the environment. You will come to notice that instead of being distributed in the environment, bed bugs are distributed mainly in harborages.

When human dwellings is the subject, the harborages are inclusive of the crack and crevices that you can find, sometimes not find, in your house’s walls, behind your wallpaper, furniture and wood paneling, or even under your carpetting.

Bed bugs are more usually not so prone to activity during the night, but will feed on anything during the day, especially when hunger strikes them. So, most likely, these said bed bugs would be distributed to trees and leaves and roots and absolutely anything that they can land on and strike their fancy.

Bed bugs can also be distributed to clothing, in bedding or even your luggage. However, much to their dismay, they do not have appendages that could allow them to cling, possibly to hair feathers or fur. This would bring you to the conclusion that bed bugs leave to feast on their hosts but once done with that thing they do, they leave their hosts since they have nothing to cling with in the first place.

Adult bed bugs live exclusively as parasites that feed mainly on warm-blooded animals, the best example, and probably the most usual, would be human beings. Since bed bugs can be distributed to poor housing conditions, then it would be conclusive that the infestations o fbed bugs can be found in these places too. And if these said bed bugs do get distributed to domestic premises, then the room they will most probably attack is the bedroom.

You already know of the fact that bed bugs are distributed to cracks and crevices where they most typically hide, but you probably would find this quite surprising. Throughout this essay, have you ever wondered or asked yourself why these insects are called bed bugs? It is because they love to distribute themselves in bedrooms, specifically in the vicinity of where the host, in this case, human beings, sleeps. Oftentimes, they would even habitate in the host’s sleeping place itself, the bed. Its distribution in bedrooms are also inclusive of bed frames, behind skirting or wallpaper and the matress itself.

The War On Exterminating Bed Bugs

August 10, 2009 in The Bed Bugs Are Biting | Comments (0)

Bed bugs are tiny little creature that sucks blood off their human prey. Often dismissed as a nuisance, bed bugs are now a serious problem both at home, in the offices and luxury establishments.

Why the infestation? There are two reasons for the increase in the number of bed bugs found in homes and other establishments recently. One of them is the increase in the number travelers and immigrants who stay in motels and unknowingly bring these insects along with them back home.

The second reason is the possibility that bed bugs have now become immune to the pesticides being used. It was in the 1940?s and 1950?s that the exterminating of bed bugs began. An insecticide called DDT was used and was highly effective in killing the bed bugs population.

However, the exterminating of bed bugs was discontinued when the DDT was banned in the 1960?s for it?s harmful effect to the environment. Since then the bugs have been waiting patiently to return to our homes.

Wholesale spraying of beds, walls, floors, furniture, etc. with DDT was the solution in exterminating bed bugs. However, law does not permit this kind of remedy anymore. Exterminating bed bugs now require the more thoroughness as bed bugs become cleverer.

Bed bugs hide in the cracks of furniture, in the mattresses, throw pillow, beneath the sofa and everywhere else you can think of. This is why exterminating of bed bugs is tedious work. All the possible places for the bed bugs to live in are searched and turned over before beginning the actual process of exterminating of bed bugs. This is to ensure that there will be no more bed bugs left once the treatment is complete.

It is wise not to do the exterminating of bed bugs on your own. You may end up harming yourself rather than taking the problem away. But you can do the following to help in the exterminating of bed bugs:

? The clothes, bed sheets, line, pillowcases, blankets and the like must be washed before the treatment begins.

? Wrap mattresses in a huge black plastic bag then put it under the sun.

? Vacuum all the nooks and crannies visible inside the home.

? Seal any gaps in the furniture, floorboards and cracks where the bed bugs can hide.

After that, step side and let the professionals start the exterminating of bed bugs in your home.

The process of exterminating of bed bugs continues with the application of insecticide spray on the furniture. There are different types of spray for every kind of equipment like mattresses or carpets. Some of these chemicals for the exterminating of bed bugs are odorless and has leaves little to no residue on the furniture. A professional does the exterminating of bed bugs with the proper protective gear.

Exterminating of bed bugs infestation is tedious work and requires a lot of patience. These pests live in cracks that are difficult to reach with pest control products and can survive months without food. By making sure that all the areas have been sprayed properly, the exterminating of bed bugs will be more effective.

After the exterminating of bed bugs through spraying of insecticides, the next process is to use insecticide dust. This dusting is very important in exterminating of bed bugs because this is what kills the bed bugs. The insecticide dust reaches for those areas that have the spray has left behind.

The entire process of exterminating of bed bugs can last three days to weeks, depending on the infestation. Normally, the exterminating of bed bugs was quicker with the houses being sprayed with DDT. But now the process is more targeted, meaning slower but thorough.

This doesn?t mean that the new procedure for exterminating of bed bugs is less effective. The business has changed over the years and now professionals must be considerate of the clients needs for being careful with their possessions.

Homes are not the only ones fighting for the exterminating of bed bugs. Hotels, vintage shops, motels, dormitories and apartments all have a war with exterminating of bed bugs. Maintaining proper hygiene on these properties can great reduce the bed bug infestation. And if push comes to shove, the pest control number is in the yellow pages.
